How the Movie Rating Screen was Designed & Free Template Download

Article Begins: The title of this article is a bit of a play on words; it references the movie trailer rating screen (seen above), as well as the physical screen I used to screen-print some 1-color posters (seen at the bottom of this write-up). As part of this post, I've made available some free assets (EPS, Photoshop, and Illustrator files) that I created for this layout, so you can remix, mash-up, or create your own! Also included is a template for the standard trailer rating screen, in case you are making a spoof or parody and want to customize it.

Screen Printing an R-Rated Poster

Article Begins: This layout was inspired by the old MPAA pre-roll screens from the ’70s, though I recreated all the various elements ("R" symbol, MPAA logo, fonts) based on their modern counterparts. It was also an experiment and a series of firsts: the first time I used water-based ink, screen printed on paper, and used a diazo photo emulsion. Before I cleaned the screen, some water dripped on it, and the red, water-based ink started to run like blood. The dim, yellow lighting from the spray booth illuminated the screen from behind. After splashing a little more water on the screen, I snapped a picture and turned it into an alternate poster design.
